Reversed Cards

I had long ago abandoned using ‘reversed’ cards in my spreads because to me that distinction really meant nothing. When a card appears, it is by its relation to the other cards in the spread that helps ‘refine’ the otherwise ‘wide’ meaning intrinsic to any card, ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ and all inbetween. It is, to me, linear thinking to rely on the card’s relative orientation to decide its ‘benevolence’ or ‘malevolence’. The querent’s (client’s) actions-behaviors-reactions will determine that.

But there is a property from Astrology that can be projected onto this issue of reversed cards, while still retaining the intrinsic dynamic balance of “benevolence” and “malevolence” in its appearance in the spread. Even in an astrological reading, I see those who treat a Retrograde Planet is somehow “opposite” the meaning of the Direct Planet, because of its ‘apparent’ “backwards” motion. However, there is a property of Retrograde Planets that is not mere ‘appearance’: for the planets outside of the Earth’s Orbit (Mars and beyond), they appear retrograde when they are closest to the Earth itself.

Thus it is suggested that Retrograde Planets should be treated as if they are “too close” and therefore there is a “lack of perspective” or “lack of objectivity”. Armed with this notion, it was not difficult for me to shift my ‘word mind’ into considering Retrograde Planets as being “Indirect” as compared to Direct Planets.

A “direct” factor can represent that which is “definite”, whereas an “indirect” factor can represent that which is “vague” and “indefinite”. (The cynic in me can easily draw a parallel of comparing a Scientist and a Politician.) At least with this ‘Direct or Indirect’ model, it is simply a matter of “perspective” or “perceptual capacity”, completely divorsed from the “benevolence” or “malevolence” of the factor. The ‘good’ or ‘bad’ morality model has been removed.

Why not apply this same principle to Direct Cards and Reversed Cards in the reading spread? A Direct Card can represent a property that has a greater potential of being more easily apparent, easily noticable. A Reversed or Indirect Card can represent a property that will require greater awareness by the querent (client) to notice its manifestation; it will be more ‘indefinite’, ‘vague’ and maybe even ‘tricky’.

How I use the 3 Card Spread

If I am not mistaken, the common view of the 3-Card Spread has the basic model of a “Before / During / After” methodology. The method is entrenched in a time-based causal-linear mode. One flanking card is described as “leading up to” or “preceding”, and the other flanking card is described as “following after” or “succeeding” — or otherwise similar metaphors.
But I have found it more ‘profitable’ to take the mind out of such a causal-linear model in the initial stage, and then subsequently consider a causal-linear image to make the possibilities of the ‘prediction’-picture “fuller”.

“What the hell does he mean by all this?”
There is a way of viewing the Houses of Astrology in terms of four clusters of three phases (yes, I get that this is not new, but just be patient), and the three phases can be described with ideas that lend to divorcing from a causal-linear mind-set, even though the ideas in that context still do apply to an “input / output” model. The three metaphors used are an “Entry phase”, an “Assimilation phase” and a “Preparation phase”. What I found fascinating was to shift the mind from the “input / output” model to a “condensation / evaporation” model. (Fans of classic alchemical metaphors will find a parallel by taking “solve et coagula” and inverting it to “coagula et solve”.) There is a “coalescing” and a “dissolution”. This process is intimately bound to my own conception of YIN and YANG in terms of “enfolding” and “unfolding“. To steal terms from ‘wave dynamics’, there is a “compression” and there is an “attenuation”.

The central card still retains its description as “the central consideration”. It is the focus of the theme. The flanking cards are auxiliary to this “central theme”. That does not change. What changes is the beginning assumption that the flanking cards describe “before / after”, “preceding / succeeding” causal-linear determination. This is where the reader’s mind is challenged. How does the “condensation” to the “central issue” not “precede”, and the “evaporation” of the “central issue” not “succeed”? The reader is forced to face an intrinsic time-based causal-linear bias; which, in my opinion, ‘limits’ the possibilities of what can be delivered with the reading. The reader can still eventually consider a time-based causal-linear description — it just might best not be the primary mode.

“So how do you get out the time-based causal-linear mind-set?”
I do no have a convenient ‘cookbook’ answer to that. (Actually, I do, but that is way beyond the simple considerations here.) The key is simply “change your mind”. You do not have to go into any “cosmic jim/jane” mode to get there. Just dare to consider a way of viewing the picture without a “before / after” model. The best way to describe the mind-set is to really take the “Be Here Now” attitude to heart. The entire event is concurrent. It is like sending a message, and getting a response ‘before’ the message-receiver might have received the message, but ‘after’ you sent the message; or, receiving ‘the response’ just as you ‘send the message’ — as if “they read your mind” (or some similar soothing explanation). When Uncle Einstein described the ramifications of ‘general relativity’, he described how when the vehicle “slows down” and the passenger’s body ‘falls forward’, it is caught in a ‘gravitational field’. The usual causal-linear mind-set thinks “brakes applied”=”make gravitational field”. What really messes with the causal-linear mind-set is to first consider “gravitational field”=”brakes applied”, then to wonder “did ‘gravitational field’ make the ‘breaks applied’ phenomenon?” Now you are getting closer, but no less confused.

I choose to view the flanking cards as if one of them is like an enfolding to the “central issue”, and the other is like an unfolding of the “central issue”. As with any Card Spread, it is up to the reader how to determine which card ‘means’ which. If you choose to do a ‘controlled spread’ and have the cards placed ‘side-to-side’, or ‘above-to-below’, is entirely up to you as the reader. If you choose to discretely place a card before you and call that one “the central issue”, and then wildly fling one card one way in the room and call that one “the enfolding“, and then wildly fling another card another way in the room and call that one “the unfolding” — so be it!

I happen to have another novelty, which really gets in touch with “random Mercury”. I am the one who does the thorough shuffling, and then the querent is the one who divides that shuffled deck into three sections. When the querent divides the deck into the three cuts, I “mentally determine” which segment is which group. Then from each of those sections, I randomly choose a card thereof, by ‘wildly’ poking my finger into each of the designated groups, and pulling the according card.

I must emphasize that nowhere am I claiming that a time-based causal-linear interpretation is ‘incorrect’. I simply feel that it is a limitation of an otherwise richness that can be offered even by a simple 3 Card Spread.

“Timing”? with Tarot?

Time-based predictive behavior is an inherent capacity in Astrology. Time-based predictive behavior with any other form of divination is tricky at best, and is entirely dependent upon “intuition” or “other-vision” — which reeks of subjectivity, so it is fine for self-reading, but gets sloppy when reading for others.

Before going any further with this, let’s get something out of the way. It is utterly useless to attempt to derive any “timing” with the Trumps and the Courts. Their intrinsic “meaning” does not lend to any “quantification”. This examination will focus on using the Number Cards as “timing” devices.

So what is to be “quantified”? Humans have gotten into the habit of measuring “time” with discrete “time-measuring” devices — clocks, calendars, etc. These are artificial constructs of artificial constructs, derivative of derivatives. Those devices in particular are derived from the Sequential Recurrence of the apparent Solar Cycle, which is the original artificial construct. (Yes, yes, “it” is considered a “natural phenomenon”; just follow along for now.) So let’s say you pull the 7 Wands. Do you disregard that it is a Wand card, focusing on the 7, so that you might as well have pulled any other 7 card? Fine — then 7 what? Minutes, hours, days, months, years? Let’s say you decide to determine that one Suite represent one type of “time-period” and another Suite represents another type. Do you see how you are getting deeper and deeper into artificial constructs of artificial constructs? Given that the presiding ‘deity’ of tarot divination is “Mercury”, “he” will have a blast with this technique, completely befuddling the reading. Sure, you will get a ‘definite’ reading, but will it match “real-time” events?

There is a way out of this swamp: go back to ‘original’ artificial constructs that are much more “intimate” — Actual Living Occurrences.

The numbers themselves, of course, provide the “quantification”. So it is up to the Suite to determine the type of ‘event’ to be “sequentially measured” or “quantified”.

I propose these four ‘classes’:

Wand = a “high-impact” experiencial moment or instant;

Disc (Pantacle) = a discrete physical condition (bodily and/or environmentally);

Sword = a “thought-package” or discrete mindset;

Cup = an “emotion-package” — but better, a discernible Cycle or Period (this one is the trickiest).

All of these qualify as discernibly discrete ‘events’ that can be “sequentially measured” ‘in time’. They serve as a much better “personal clock” (if you will). This tactic will be much more effective with a self-reading; and yet, by direct contrast, all the more difficult with reading for another!

Then, amidst the general spread, the Trumps and Courts, by juxtaposition, can serve as “qualifiers”.

I hope this moment of entertainment may prove ‘useful’.

I myself have never used the cards for “time-based predicting”. For such, I refer to Astrology, but that is a completely different symbol system.

The Book of TARO

[This was my first attempt to outline the entirety of what I had come to think I ‘knew’ of “the Tarot”, after an over-quarter-century association with “them”. This is being reproduced in the spirit of nostalgia, as the opening post to this blog site devoted exclusively to “Tarot” matters.]

Summer Solstice 2009
Consider this as a Technical Paper.
It is very much an Outline: giving briefs, and somewhat relying upon previous instruction with some terminology. Do not let the Neophyte be dissuaded ! Of what “Moses” ‘stole’ from The Egyptians, and then morphed into a Delivery System of TransPersonal Processes, we will never ‘know’ the original version. What we have at this time is a complexity of ad-jointed & dis-jointed associations.
Careful and diligent examination does reveal Essential Patterning.
This apparent premature presentation is in the spirit of Participation. Elongated expositions of all the Images will extend into an Entire Novel. ‘I am’ only one lens in this investigation, enforced only by precedent reading combined with personal experience. Community Contribution has value, even if it is only 10/100; but who ‘knows’ when ‘you’ might be an arbitrary Channel in any event.

The Tarot Trumps describe an evolving process from 0-21. That is why they were arrayed as they were in the ‘Legendary’ Initiation Temple.
The occult revivalists transmitted a schema which assigns these discrete ideas to the ‘Paths of the Tree of Life’ cascading from the Summit to the Base; yet the Structure of the Tree is implied to evolve (for the Aspirant) from the Base to the Summit.
To be elementary-dualistic, the Mystickal Process achieves connection with TransPersonal Confluence (depicted as a serpent ‘ascending’ the Tree), and the Magickal Process is to ‘pull in’ such into the Physical Temple (a ‘descending’ lightning-bolt). In concert with the ‘strange’ Path-attributes, the Tree-scheme describes a Summit-to-Base Magick evolution, because the Aspirant is Reconstructing the Physical.
The following are all reference to the Aleister Crowley Tarot Deck. Those using other ‘classic style’ cards may find a dissonance in translation — and this is your challenge.

The Path(s) of Reconstruction describes a general tri-fold process:

* 0-6 = Destruction : This sequence describes the Re-education of the Aspirant, the Re-imprinting of the NeuroStructure:
0: to Re-Imagine the Possible.
The Renunciation of The Previous; Plunging into The Unknown.
1: to Suspect to ‘Be’ a ‘Doer’; to ‘Be a God’ that ‘Goes Forth’.
2: to See The Goddess, and glimpse a vision of The Center of Effort.
3: to See Life-as-it-is, a Sea of Dynamic Organism, without pretense of ‘plan’.
4: to Find a ‘Station of Power’, i.e. “to be determined”.
5: to Find a ‘Source of Instruction’ to extend the ‘Station of Power’.
6: to See an ‘Oracular-style’ revelation of Orientation.

* 7-14 = Reconstruction : This sequence describes the Aspirant Working(s) of this Re-imprinted NeuroStructure:
7: Acquaintance with Soma-Vehicular Orientation.

Here is The Bridge, the Critical Horizon, between The PASSION and the Stripping of the Excrement inhibiting the ‘shine’ of That Passion. Here is the Most Severe Work of the Adept, involving long and patient Effort — a kind of damnable adventure, because it is primarily ‘solo’, except for those Brief Rendezvous with one’s Siblings of Evolution offering ‘gold’ — before the ‘natural cascade’ can resume. Detective-level exploration of The Bare Self, identifying the unnecessary.
(I had the above notion while reflecting on the Mythick Practice called The Sleep of Siloam: a technique I still really haven’t figured out with the clues at hand, except for the ‘strange’ association by Aleister Crowley with his Chapter 12 of Magick: ‘The Bloody Sacrifice’. The body of the chapter covers ‘technical details’, but much of his other writing blatantly ‘gives the secret’ — i.e. The Sacrifice is The Giving Up of Self to ‘The Beloved’.
The ‘Original Patriarchal Bloody Sacrifice’ originated with the ‘realization’ of the seminal discharge in relation to ‘A Future You’. Whatever You Build will survive in the Spasm of Surrender, and it must ‘Be Itself’, without ‘Your Intrusion’.
For The Passion of The Magickal Act, Identification must be separated from The Act. Even Gurdjieff comprehended (‘understood’) this, without any Desire to Magick, as a key to effective functional living.
The ‘Original Matriarchal Bloody Sacrifice’ was, and will always be, the ‘Trauma’ of Birthing. While ‘Man’ gets away with metaphorizing a momentary experience, ‘Woman’ has an epic imprint of Long Gestation of a Life Separable, and then, for those women who have given physical birth to a ‘separate child’, the ‘trauma’ of brain-change is not some ‘separate option’.
She is forced into a personal cataclysm; and her only relief (if it appears) is the Joy of Producing Another Tangible LifeForm. This is very different from the classic Male Myopic Fantasy of Transcendence.
However, the Siblings of Evolution stepped in, and figured out how to subject ‘Man’ to ‘a similar trauma’.
I will always remember the Sister who experienced a ‘traumatic’ 11-hour Birthing, and was amazed that ‘some dumb male’ had experienced the same Transcendent Visions, and was especially ‘fascinated’ when she learned that I had found the ‘same’ experience with LSD.
This card is especially biased in ‘technical terms’ toward the long-time association of This Science with Male Biology. However, despite the apparent ‘paternalistic’ bias, women should comprehend that this image is A Portrait of Trial, and that ‘The Patriarchal Technique’ is not alien to your Individual Evolution. Even The Woman Witch (‘Wizard’), ‘unimpregnated’,must eventually practice the Sacrifice of One’s Blood to ‘The Beloved’. Maybe feel ‘proud’ that ‘Man’ will never truly comprehend the biologic nuances of your reality. The sorry attempts to artificial imitations of ‘The Traumatic’ are the best we can configure. Poor Us Men!)
13: I shred the Excrement to reveal the Bare Structure.
14: I am Re-Clothed to Complete the Aspiration.
Every Actor ‘knows’ this technique:
To remove the unnecessary, and re-dress with the intent.

Now that I have burdened you with considerations of the Trumps, it is left to define these Numbers of which ‘the paths’ connect. General Synopses have been quite misleading. The complexity of the Ideation for each of these Essential Numbers requires a complex presentation. This was the ‘wisdom’ of the Intrusion of the ‘Minor Arcana’ into the Structure of the Tarot. A Four-By Coordination of Definition.These are, obviously, brief notations. The above and the below present the ‘fleeting notions’ which conduct to build a Grand Pylon ! By sharing wild notions is the Genuine Way to Grow Knowledge !

Suite of Wands : “Will”
“Definition: Magick is the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will.
Postulate: ANY required Change may be effected by the application of the proper kind and degree of Force in the proper manner through the proper medium to the proper object.”
Introduction: Magick in Theory & Practice, Aleister Crowley.
The Suite of Wands may describe the Final Reach for the trained Magus; but for the Neophyte, it is best to consider this series to describe the ‘skeleton’ for the Other Three Bodies.
1 Wands: To Just Go !
2 Wands: particle “formation”; convergence of “matrix influence”.
3 Wands: confluence of particle “information”; “hidden” Aim of any particle “formation”.
4 Wands: center of influence. Having impact, thus ‘Being’.
5 Wands: circumference of confluence. Having impulse, thus ‘Going’.
6 Wands: convergence of affluence. ‘Becoming’.
7 Wands: directed & accumulated effort becoming Aim.
8 Wands: confluence available to any directed Aim.
9 Wands: breaking beyond any constraint against effort.
10 Wands: effort constrained to a prison of external parameters.

(So-called ‘Intuition’ should not be attributed exclusively to ‘The Fire Element’. It is primarily a function of the below processes, and should be carefully examined as to any connection to ‘The Fire’; which is possible in The High Magick.)
Even though the “Will” and the “Understanding” are ‘Above the Abyss’, the Adept must consider the following as The Three Bodies that must be developed before Reaching to the Will.

Suite of Cups : “Understanding”
To ‘Understand’ is To [Feel+Think+Sense]. The focus of the Suite of Cups is to cultivate the ‘Feeling’ component of the Human Organism: to conduce the Gel of the Organism into Co-Confluence.
1 Cups: Conscience = To Feel All !
2 Cups: wave oscillation.
3 Cups: medium of wave propagation.
4 Cups: wave ‘package’; conductive even to Material occurrence (atomic, sub-atomic).
5 Cups: wave interference.
6 Cups: wave harmonics, experienced as ‘Sympathy’; conductive to meta-atomic Material structures.
7 Cups: wave compression, experienced as ‘Fullness’ (the water is glutted to pollution).
8 Cups: wave attenuation, experienced as ‘Emptyness’ (the water is starved to stagnation).
9 Cups: wave resonance, experienced as ‘Empathy’.
10 Cups: A Closed Loop !

I will admit that I have doubt as to the BioBehavior Horizon at this point. The micro-behavior of matter answers to the above parameters. Yet the macro-behaviors of matter blends into the following suites.
What I do strongly emphasize, however, is that to attribute Morality to the above is factitious. ‘Morality’ is as artificial as ‘Mentality’. Only ‘The Moralist’ blends Morality into ‘The Feeling Function’.

The “Body” has no direct survival connection to Consciousness &/nor Conscience to occur.

2 Discs: the fundamental sub-atomic structure of matter.
3 Discs: the surrounding 4-dimensional confluence of 3-dimensional material construction.
4 Discs: the fundamental atomic structure of matter. (This portrait happens to be of the carbon atom.)
5 Discs: the contained volatility within the atomic structure. (The hidden potential for explosion.)
6 Discs: the “Cosmic Wisdom” of when & how to construct any necessary atomic structure.
7 Discs: inertia of matter. (Mass is measured by impact.)
8 Discs: the “mysterious” octave nature of atomic structuring.
9 Discs: the mutability of atomic structure.
10 Discs: macro-atomic structure. Imprisonment into material existence; the greatest sleep!
